God’s Laws Are To Protect Us
“Israel has sinned; they have violated my covenant, which I commanded them to keep. They have taken some of the devoted things; they have stolen, they have lied, they have put them with their own possessions. That is why the Israelites cannot stand against their enemies; they turn their backs and run because they have been made liable to destruction. I will not be with you anymore unless you destroy whatever among you is devoted to destruction.” – Joshua 7:11-12
The Ethan Allen was a 40-foot, glass-enclosed tour boat operated by Shoreline Cruises on Lake George in New York. On 2 October 2005, at 2:55 p.m., with 47 passengers aboard, the Ethan Allen capsized and sank just south of Cramer Point in the Town of Lake George. 20 passengers died.
An investigation found that the Ethan Allen’s passenger load weighed a total of 8,552 pounds the day it sank, a figure that put it 1,800 pounds above the weight limit it was certified to carry. That is despite the fact it was under its 50-passenger capacity.
Using the U.S. Coast Guard estimate of 140 pounds per person when determining capacity, it appears the boat was nearly a ton overweight. The accident caused government regulators to consider new laws on passenger boat capacity.
The Lord warns us to protect us. Thank Jesus for His Commandments and seek to follow Him in all that you do.
The law is not over us, to condemn us, but under our feet, to be a guide for our path.
“For in my inner being I delight in God’s law” – Romans 7:22
