A Clear Conscience
“Now this is our boast: Our conscience testifies that we have conducted ourselves in the world, and especially in our relations with you, in the holiness and sincerity that are from God. We have done so not according to worldly wisdom but according to God’s grace.” – 2 Corinthians 1:12
Charles Spurgeon was known as the “Prince of Preachers” for his lively sermons and colorful illustrations. In an updated illustration, he described the conscience.
“Do not let your conscience be hardened. It is like a body of water freezing in winter. It starts with a film of ice you can barely see. But once the film forms and the pond stays still, the glaze thickens. It starts thin, but quickly grows. It will first support small birds. It will then support a person walking over it. Eventually, you will be able to drive a loaded semi-truck over it. Conscience is like this. You may start with little things. But ignore your conscience and the Spirit and you will be willing to do worse and worse, falling farther and farther from God.”
The Lord has given us a conscience to awaken us to sin.
Confess any sin in your life to Jesus and seek to keep a clear conscience before Him and others.
“Conscience tells us that we ought to do right, but it does not tell us what right is, that we are taught by God’s word.” – H.C. Trumbull
“But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander.” – 1 Peter 3:15-16
