Are You Still A Member Of The AMYF Club?
“Do nothing out of selfishness or vain pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves.;” Philippians 2:3
So are you still a member of the AMYF?
Oh, you don’t even know about the club. Well, I know for a fact that you
enrolled as a member a long time ago. AMYF is acronym for “After Me, You’re
First!” Its all about selfishness.
You may have seen “The Toddler’s Creed” that reads, “If I want it, it’s
mine. If I give it to you and change my mind later, it’s mine. If I can
take it away from you, it’s mine. If I had it a little while ago, it’s
mine. If it’s mine, it will never belong to anyone else no matter what. If
we are building something together, it is mine. If it looks just like mine,
it’s mine.”
“It’s Mine”: the truth is that, not only kids say that, for the same words
are echoed from the law courts where people battle each other for
possession of an inheritance to the children’s play pen! From the United
Nations to the most remote villages.
No matter what the symptom is of the evils plaguing our nations today, the
bottom line is just the same as in the Toddler’s Creed—selfishness: “I want
my needs satisfied first!”
The grace of God is the one thing that changes selfishness to generosity.
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone,
the new has come!” 2 Corinthians 5:17.
The grace of God changes our dispositions as we continue to renew our minds
by the word of God. It is an ongoing work of grace which the Bible calls
sanctification.
Overcoming the gravitational pull of our old selfish nature isn’t done
by doing a single act of generosity, over which you pompously celebrate on
social media. It is a lifestyle which is marked by humility and an
understanding of who you really are, and the desire to let God love people
through you.
Paul wrote concerning Timothy, “I have no one else like him, who takes a
genuine interest in your welfare. For everyone looks out for his own
interests, not those of Jesus Christ” Philippians 2:20-21
Like Timothy, you too can choose to look out for the interest of Jesus, and let His love
be radiated through you.
“Let no one seek his own good, but that of his neighbor.” 1 Corinthians
10:24
