Character versus Gifting
“I put in charge of Jerusalem my brother Hanani, along with Hananiah the commander of the citadel, because he was a man of integrity and feared God more than most people do.”
Nehemiah 7:2
In appointing leaders for Jerusalem, Nehemiah chose individuals not solely based on their skills or accomplishments but on their character.
Hanani and Hananiah were selected because they demonstrated integrity and a deep reverence for God. Their fear of the Lord shaped their actions, ensuring they would lead with humility and wisdom.
This principle reminds us that while gifting and talent are valuable, character is what sustains effective leadership and stewardship. A person of integrity honors God in both public and private life, making decisions that align with His will rather than seeking personal gain.
In our lives, whether we are leaders, parents, or simply seeking to serve God faithfully, our character matters. Gifts and talents may open doors, but integrity and reverence for God are what allow us to walk through those doors in a way that glorifies Him.
When we prioritize godly character, we position ourselves to lead and serve in ways that have lasting impact.
