Friend of God
“And the Scripture was fulfilled that says, ‘Abraham believed God, and it was credited to him as righteousness,’ and he was called God’s friend.” James 2:23.
To be called a friend of God is the most profound and humbling title.
From the very beginning, God’s heart has always longed for a friendship that is personal and consistent.
Enoch, Job, Abraham, Moses, Samuel, David…, these men weren’t perfect, but they were real with God. They walked with Him, talked with Him, trusted Him, and yes, sometimes questioned Him, and still, they were friends.
Friendship with God isn’t reserved for Bible heroes. Jesus made a way for you to walk in it too. In John 15:15, He said, “I no longer call you servants… Instead, I have called you friends.”
Friendship with God looks like this:
1. Closeness over performance.
You don’t earn God’s friendship with perfection. You draw near with honesty, love, and faith.
2. Shared secrets.
Amos 3:7 says God reveals His plans to His friends. There are things God desires to whisper to your heart, if you’ll stay close enough to hear.
3. Mutual delight.
You enjoy being with Him and He delights in being with you. Zephaniah 3:17.
So, don’t just serve God. Walk with Him. Talk to Him like a friend. Sit quietly in His presence. Share your day, your doubts, your dreams.
Lord, help me to value Your presence above all else and to live in a way that reflects the closeness You desire. I choose to walk with You, not just as my Savior, but as my Friend. Amen.
