God’s Kindness
“David asked, ‘Is there anyone left of the house of Saul, that I may show kindness for Jonathan’s sake’. 2 Samuel 9:1
Jonathan and Saul died in battle and all their families died except one – Mephibosheth who had become crippled at age five when the nurse was trying to escape with him. (2 Samuel 4:4)
The news had come from Jezreel that the King and the heir apparent were dead and so all surviving persons related to the king needed to run for their lives because the conquering enemy nation or the new king will not want to leave anyone alive that could cause trouble. It was in the cause of this escape that the accident that crippled Mephibosheth happened.
And to David’s enquiry, Ziba responded in 2 Samuel 9:2, ‘There is one however he is lame in both feet’.
This answer could be to tell David not to be bothered about Mephibosheth because he is not a threat since he is a cripple, or that he doesn’t deserve any recognition or favour because he has a deformity. Whichever it is, David didn’t allow the ‘BUT’ to stop him from showing God’s kindness to Mephibosheth.
Despite the ‘BUT’ in his life, the King sent for him. He brought him to the city of Jerusalem from the obscure Lo-debar. He gave him a seat at the Kings table and seated at that table, his crippled legs were hidden from sight, his deficiency and shame were covered. Mephibosheth’s life was changed forever by David’s kindness.
God’s kindness is much like this. Irrespective of your deficiencies and shortcomings, God will remember you and show you His kindness. He will turn your life around and give you a seat of honour. Amen
In Isaiah 54:8, He says, “In an outburst of anger I hid My face from you for a moment, but with everlasting lovingkindness, I will have compassion on you,” says the Lord your Redeemer.”
