He Understands
“Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being tired from his journey, sat down by the well. It was about the sixth hour.” John 4:6
In this passage, Jesus had been travelling all day in the hot sun, and coming to this resting place He sat down by the well, hungry, thirsty and tired!
This is an experience we can all understand and relate to. We have pictured Jesus healing, teaching, walking on water, raising the dead, being transfigured, and as such He is far above us, and maybe only remotely relatable, but now picturing him hungry, thirsty and tired after a long journey in the heat and dust, it is easy to see him down at our level, feeling our feels.
This High Priest of ours indeed understands our weaknesses, for he faced all of the same testings we do…(Hebrews 4:15) and the comfort comes to us from the fact that He is able now to sympathize with us when we are also tired, maybe even tired of everything and feel like just giving up.
A second lesson here is that even in His tiredness, Jesus didn’t bring judgement upon the Samaritan woman, rather he extended grace. He ministered to the need of her soul and she never remained the same. You too, go and do likewise.
Then Jesus said, “Let’s go off by ourselves to a quiet place and rest awhile.” He said this because there were so many people coming and going that Jesus and his apostles didn’t even have time to eat. Mark 6:31
“I will refresh the weary and satisfy the faint.” Jeremiah 31:25
