Loving Money
“Whoever loves money never has money enough; whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with his income. This too is meaningless.” – Ecclesiastes 5:10
John Camden Neild (1780-1852) was a landlord and notorious miser famous for leaving all of his property to Queen Victoria (who accepted it).
Neild inherited his father’s fortune and basically spent the last 30 years of his life being a cranky miser about it. He kept his massive house sparsely furnished, including going without a bed for a stretch, just to save on expenses. He wouldn’t buy an overcoat and the clothes he did have were in constant disrepair.
He had tenants on his vast estates in Buckinghamshire but refused to repair their homes when needed. He even neglected a church on one of his properties, choosing to stuff the cracks with cotton rather than have them properly repaired.
Money should NOT command our affection and be the driving force in our lives.
Praise Jesus that true wealth is knowing and loving Him.
“There is nothing that makes men rich and strong but that which they carry inside of them. Wealth is of the heart, not of the hand.” – John Milton
“A faithful man will be richly blessed, but one eager to get rich will not go unpunished.” – Proverbs 28:20
