More Than A Carpenter
“Is not this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and brother of James and Joseph and Judas and Simon? And are not His sisters here with us?” And they took offence at Him.” Mark 6:3
This verse sheds some light on the life of Jesus as a youth before he began his public ministry, he was not lazy, rather he was hard working and must have been helping to provide for His mother and younger ones.
In Jesus, we see that there is no disgrace in working at one’s trade since the Son of God Himself was known by his trade as a carpenter.
We also see here the humility of Jesus. He could afford not to work a trade yet He did.
Though “he was rich, yet he became poor, ”(2 Corinthians 8:9) and even worked for His daily bread. It assures us of His identification with those who work. It is a pleasant and comforting thought that the hands that now hold the sceptre once wielded the hammer, chisel and saw.
Furthermore, the Jews of his days took offence at him because they saw him from a worldly point of view. They refused to see the grace of God upon him and many therefore missed out on God’s visitation.
This is something we should watch out against, so we don’t miss out on God’s provision for us. We should not be like the Jews who took offence merely because the Lord was not appareled in fancy clothes or glamorous titles.
“So we have stopped evaluating others from a human point of view. At one time we thought of Christ merely from a human point of view. How differently we know him now!” 2 Corinthians 5:16
