One Thing
“One thing I have desired of the LORD, that will I seek: That I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to inquire in His temple.” Psalm 27:4.
These days, the distractions are endless, with pressing demands, and multiplied desires.
David’s words cut through the noise with striking clarity: “One thing I have desired…” Not ten things. Not even two. Just one.
David was a warrior, a king, a leader, but at the core, he was a lover of God. His deepest desire wasn’t more power, peace from his enemies, or worldly success. His cry was for God’s presence. He longed to dwell, gaze, and inquire. That was the “one thing” he pursued above all else.
1. To Dwell: David didn’t want occasional visits with God. He wanted habitation, a life built around the nearness of the Lord. True transformation begins not in striving, but in staying.
2. To Behold: David longed not just for answers but for awe. In God’s presence, he saw beauty beyond description. Do we still pause long enough to gaze, not just glance at the beauty of holiness?
3. To Inquire: God’s presence is not only where we worship but where we seek. David brought his questions, his confusions, his longings to the Lord, not just for solutions, but for relationship.
This is what it means to live with a focused heart, a life not scattered by lesser pursuits but anchored by one eternal passion: God Himself.
*Some questions for you:*
What is your “one thing”?
Have other desires quietly taken the throne of your heart?
Are you a visitor in God’s presence or a dweller?
Lord, strip away from my heart the clutter of divided desires. Birth in me a fresh hunger for You, that my highest joy may be to dwell in Your presence, behold Your beauty, and inquire in Your temple. Amen.
