Peter’s Fall
“Simon Peter was still standing and warming himself. So they asked him, “Aren’t you also one of His disciples?” He denied it and said, “I am not.” John 18:25
For our own sake, we need to watch out for what led to Peter’s fall.
First was his self-confidence. When forewarned, he rebuffed the Lord’s words and declared that though others may deny Jesus, he never would.
When we become boastful we are in danger of falling, for our safety lies in the consciousness of our weakness, and our absolute trust in God.
The next step toward Peter’s fall was his sleeping at the time when he should have been watching and praying. Jesus said to watch and pray that you may not fall into temptation. Matthew 26:41. Neglecting this is a recipe for a fall.
Another step was his rashness in drawing his sword and cutting the high priest’s servant’s ear in the garden. John 18:10.
It was the will of God that Jesus be crucified and kicking against that by fighting was not God’s will. Reacting rashly in the flesh will never serve the will of the Father.
Another step toward Peter’s fall was his following Jesus from afar. Matthew 26:58. In our walk with the Lord, every time put a distance between us and the Lord we are in danger of falling.
It is therefore crucial that we watch out against all these seeing that the coming of our Lord is so imminent.
Now unto him, that is able to keep you from falling, and to present you faultless before the presence of his glory with exceeding joy, To the only wise God our Saviour, be glory and majesty, dominion and power, both now and ever. Amen. Jude 1:24-25
