Salted Speech
“Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.” Colossians 4:6.
Words are powerful. They carry weight. They reflect the state of our hearts, and they shape how others experience us, and more importantly, how they experience Christ through us.
Scripture urges us to let our speech be seasoned with salt, meaning, our words should preserve life, add value, and reflect wisdom and grace.
In the story from the book, “Misreading Scripture with Western Eyes,” a child’s innocent mimicry revealed how easily we can absorb language and culture, even when unintended. It also highlighted a deeper truth: the culture we cultivate with our words matters. Children watch us. Colleagues listen to us. Heaven hears us.
Speech seasoned with salt is not just about avoiding profanity; it’s about intentional, godly communication. Are our words healing or cutting? Do we lift others or tear them down? Do we speak truth with grace, or do we crush with condemnation?
God takes words seriously. “You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your God,” Exodus 20:7, reminds us that even invoking His name must be done with reverence.
Let the Holy Spirit guide your tongue. Let your words reflect the kindness, truth, and beauty of Christ.
Lord, set a guard over my mouth. Let my words build and not break. Season my speech with grace, love, and wisdom. May those who hear me, hear You. In Jesus’ name, amen.
