Showing Gratitude
“Let us come into his presence with thanksgiving; let us make a joyful noise to him with songs of praise!” Psalm 95:2
There is a difference between expressing thanks for something and being genuinely grateful for it. For example, if you agree to do some work for a fixed sum of money, and you fulfil your obligation. You completed the work within the prescribed time and you do it well, then you get paid. Common courtesy demands that you respond, with “Thank you!”.
Suppose, however, when you got the alert – to your great surprise – you discover that more than twice what you expected was paid. Being an honest person you call and say, “I think a mistake was made. You paid twice the amount that you owe me,” and you are told, “Yes, I know that, but I appreciate what you have done and I wanted you to have a bonus.” Now the emotion that you feel is gratitude, one that goes far beyond a social, courtesy thank you.
Sincere, genuine gratitude isn’t merely a matter of empty words but of a heartfelt expression of appreciation.
In a very real sense this is what God’s grace is about. God’s great favour and kindness is what brought Jesus to the Earth, providing for our salvation. Grace and God’s faithfulness in extending His mercy to us is what sustains us and what keeps us.
Sincere gratitude embraces what you are thankful for and to whom you are grateful. In everything, give thanks!
“Bless the Lord, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits, who forgives all your iniquity, who heals all your diseases, who redeems your life from the pit, who crowns you with steadfast love and mercy, who satisfies you with good so that your youth is renewed like the eagle’s.” Psalm 103:2-5
