The Bereans
“Now the Bereans were of more noble character than those in Thessalonica, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” Acts 17:11
The Bible says the Bereans were of more “noble character”, that is, they were more honourable, distinguished, fair-minded and ethical. They are the kind that takes their time to check what they hear out for themselves to confirm its veracity. Even if an angel tells them something, they will still check it out carefully to confirm its accuracy.
The Bereans had been listening to the powerfully anointed Apostle Paul himself but still, when they got home they sat down and carefully cross-checked each statement with their bible.
Many times, some of us choose those we listen to, and thereafter we completely close our minds to checking out the truth of what they are saying. That is not good enough.
It is wise to carefully review everything you hear with your Bible. It may take your time but do this to establish the revelation in the word and to appropriate it for yourself.
It’s a principle to use for so many other things that you hear people say on any issue, just as the Bible says, “a truth is established by two or more witnesses.” (2 Corinthians 13:1) This means we must always check the facts and not be too quick to run with hearsays.
If we do this, we will not spread lies, gossips, and rumours. We will not be scammed or swindled, we will make better investment decisions and get into the right relationships, networks, and friendships.
Then we will live noble and honourable lives like the Bereans because we have tested and know what we say and do.
