What Is Your Real Worth?
“But the LORD said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or stature, for I have rejected him. The LORD does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.” 1 Samuel 16:7
How do we really know the worth of a person? Do we consider the person’s age, stature, financial capacity, ideas, network or accomplishments?
But then, what does God look at in a person? What measure does God use in determining the true mark of a person – the true greatness? I think we would all agree that in these days of greed, pressure and exploitation, surely God views life from a different perspective.
So what does God use for the true measure of a person?
Some time ago, when Richard Nixon was President of the United States, he stood before the coffin of Dwight David Eisenhower who had also been the US president years on and said these words, “We find ourselves today thinking first not of his deeds but his character. It was the character of the man, not what he did but what he was.”
I do not think that Nixon was trying to be theological, yet I believe he stressed a great biblical truth. In the sight of God, the true mark of a man is his character, his being, not his age, accomplishments, ideas, network or net worth.
God’s perspective is certainly a different perspective from ours. We are often caught in the trap of materialism and pragmatism. We put the emphasis on doing; God puts it on being. We put the emphasis on accomplishment; God puts it on the character.
What you are is far more important than what you will ever do, whether you are the president of the World Bank or you are a street sweeper, in the sight of God, being is more important than doing!
You need to begin to view life from a different perspective – the perspective of eternity, and realize that being is more important than doing!
So what is your worth? A successful……….. worth millions or even billions, or a humble labourer as the world see you. The question is – are you a success in the eyes of God?
God is still looking for men and women of character who will stand to be counted. He found David – Psalm 89:20, will He find you?
