Why Jesus Died
Today is a good time to consider the “Gospel” list of why Jesus died.
1-He died as our substitute:
For God sent Christ Jesus to take the punishment for our sins and to end all God’s anger against us. He used Christ’s blood and our faith as the means of saving us from his wrath. In this way, he was being entirely fair, even though he did not punish those who sinned in former times. For he was looking forward to the time when Christ would come and take away those sins. And now in these days also he can receive sinners in this same way because Jesus took away their sins. But isn’t this unfair for God to let criminals go free, and say that they are innocent? No, for he does it based on their trust in Jesus who took away their sins. Romans 3:25-26
2-He died to be our Advocate, to reconcile us to God:
My little children, I am telling you this so that you will stay away from sin. But if you sin, there is someone to plead for you before the Father. His name is Jesus Christ, the one who is all that is good and who pleases God completely. He is the one who took God’s wrath against our sins upon himself and brought us into fellowship with God, and he is the forgiveness for our sins, and not only ours but all the world’s. 1 John 2:1-2
3-He died to be our Mediator:
For this reason, Christ is the mediator of a new covenant, that those who are called may receive the promised eternal inheritance—now that he has died as a ransom to set them free from the sins committed under the first covenant. Hebrews 9:15
4-He died to grant us eternal life.
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. John 3:16
Dear Lord, thank you for taking our place on the Cross and taking the punishment we deserve. Thank you for being faithful to us at all times, even when we fail you. Blessed be your name forever. Amen.
