You Are A Worshiper
“Their idols are merely things of silver and gold, shaped by human hands. Psalm 115:4
Everyone worships, but not everyone worships the Almighty God. Some are content to worship the creature rather than the creator – Idols that we have made by our own selves, and the paradox of an idol is that the worshiper gives it power. We are the ones who give it life. The Idols of many are Work, Money, Music, Sex, Fame etc. They only become a god to us when we make them one by worshipping them.
But the Lord Jesus is King of Kings and Lord of Lords regardless of what we do. He is the only one worth giving our life to.
It is easy to laugh at the imagery of the Old Testament folks who bow down to graven images as if we are more enlightened and would never do anything so foolish. Yet nothing has changed, except for the clothes the idols wear.
An Idol will never really satisfy, it will not forgive you or give you joy. An Idol will not love you? It can’t. They are creatures of our own making.
An Idol can be anything. It can be good things like relationships, family or work. The problem is, even good things can become Idols to us once they become the centre of our worship and we begin to get our satisfaction, worth, and identity from the ‘thing’.
God is against idols because it is only when the pieces of life are in their proper places that we can enjoy Him and those things best.
When we make another person or thing an idol, we end up squeezing the life out of them. Only one person has the ability to sustain being God, and that’s Jesus.
When we worship Jesus, we can put that person or thing in the proper perspective because our centre isn’t tied to or defined by them. If they upset us, rather than affecting us negatively every time, we can give back love, grace, and forgiveness because our self-worth comes from God.
One of the biggest traits of an idol is that we are blinded to it. It seems normal to us. That’s the allure and power of an idol, we usually don’t know we have one unless it gets attacked or taken away. The easiest way to find an idol is to poke it. If it’s an idol, it will show its teeth. It will bark back. They always do.
Today let’s choose to bow before God and worship only Him.
“…a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth, for the Father is seeking such as these to worship Him.” John 4:23
